Burns & McDonnell’s world headquarters in Kansas City, MO, is looking for a Staff Environmental Scientist to facilitate construction site and operational facility permit compliance, stormwater planning, environmental inspections and federal/state/local permitting on a variety of projects nationwide. Use your environmental background to assist clients in maintaining permit compliance on a variety of large-scale construction projects and operational facilities across a diverse range of industries including renewables, high-voltage electric transmission, oil and gas, transportation, and water treatment.

The Staff Environmental Scientist – Compliance position will sit in the Kansas City world headquarters office within our Environmental Services Global Practice and will perform the following duties:

  • Perform onsite environmental compliance inspections of active construction and operational facilities for permit compliance.

  • Prepare Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) and design stormwater Best Management Practices Plans (BMP Plans).

  • Oversee and conduct field surveys/assessments and collect project-related data for analysis in environmental impact projects.

  • Oversee and prepare technical reports, compliance inspection reports, stormwater plans, and environmental site investigations.

  • Utilize GIS data for map production and BMP Plan design in accordance with standards and industry best practices.

  • Prepare a wide variety of permitting application packages such as stormwater, land use, and local permits.

  • Work includes a mix of field assessments, report/permit preparation, and travel.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Water Quality, Geology, Biology, Soil Science or a related natural science degree from an accredited program required.

  • At least 4 years of experience working in the environmental consulting field related to environmental compliance inspections.

  • Experience on active construction projects or operational facilities preferred.

  • Strong background in the ArcGIS desktop/AGOL environment.

  • Working knowledge of stormwater best management practices/erosion and sediment controls.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental site assessment methods, environmental compliance and audits, environmental permitting process (i.e., basic knowledge of waters and wetland permitting, threatened and endangered species permitting, and cultural resources).

  • Ability to multitask in a fast pace, deadline driven work environment.

  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.

  • Ability to work 75% or more in the field, and overnight travel to field locations.
