Burns & McDonnell Staff GIS Strategist - Environmental Services (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

The Staff Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Strategist is responsible for consulting internal project teams on available GIS tools, technology and workflows and the implementation and execution of GIS on a variety of projects and industries. This position will create project workflows and collaborate with project leaders to fully leverage GIS tools and data in order to drive project efficiency and increased quality of end deliverables.

  • Develop GIS system configurations, maps and data sets for client teams.

  • Creates technical specifications, project approach, cost estimates and schedules.

  • Develop and recommend GIS mapping and data collection strategy.

  • Researches and proposes various software packages and information from various sources (MS Access databases, MS Excel spreadsheets and documents such as deeds, field notes etc.) to create GIS maps to support field personnel as well as for deliverables.

  • Analyzes project development of GIS system configurations and requirements.

  • Identifies GIS system needs and requirements to implement improved work methods.

  • Consults with internal project teams on GIS technology and solutions available to increase project efficiency.

  • Updates new and existing GIS maps and map layers and GPS data edition and representation using ArcGIS in support of field surveys.

  • Implements new geospatial software or programs.

  • Prepares and presents project analysis studies and recommendations to meet or exceed business goals, quality, and project efficiency.

  • Collaborates with project leadership to identify training needs for both internal and external project members.

  • Performs quality checks and analyzes data conversions and translations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, or related field and 4 years related experience required or associate's degree and 6 years related experience.

  • Master's degree in a similar field preferred.

  • Demonstrated proficiency working in the ArcGIS desktop environment is required (ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 or higher a plus). 

  • Strong knowledge of data analysis.

  • Ability to work independently, think creatively and analytically, and make quick and sound decisions.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
