1898 & Co.’s Business Lines have been developed to facilitate a strategic approach to selling services, developing staff, and maintaining client relationships. A Business Line lead’s (i.e., Director’s) main responsibility is to set the near-term and long-term vision for achieving these goals within the Business Line that supports the growth of 1898 & Co. Global.

This is an opportunity to join an ambitious dynamic team during an innovative growth stage within 1898 & Co. We are seeking an outstanding commercially driven individual with the vision to help grow and deliver our expanding international Transactions Advisory business. The role is for an experienced technical advisor & deal focused professional. This appointment will be made on the basis of a demonstrated track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams, and building, sustaining and commercialising relationships with clients in a Transactions Advisory market.

The Transaction Advisory Business Line Lead will direct the service offerings and business provided by 1898 & Co. Currently, 1898 & Co. supports a broad range of studies to support our client-partners through business and technology decisions. The Business Line lead will provide technical and business leadership to the team by leading our Transaction Advisory consulting services in EMEA.


The Business Line lead be responsible for, and manage, all aspects of the Transaction Advisory service offering from business planning, business development, study execution, and team leadership. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Business Planning & Strategy: Create, develop, manage, and communicate the strategic direction of the Business Line. This will include the setting of financial targets for the Business Line, such as sales, revenue, profitability, and chargeability, as well as budgets for overhead expenses, such as marketing trips, conferences, software, certifications, etc. Prepare and manage a business plan for the strategic growth of the Business Line including expansion of current and new service offerings, marketing activities, client retention and acquisition, and staff growth plan.

  • Business Development & Sales: Execute the business plan to grow sales and revenue for the Business Line; coordinate with business development managers to identify opportunities and propose services to key clients; assign client relationships to study managers supporting the Business Line; collaborate with sales and marketing staff to develop proposals, collateral and other marketing material to grow the Business Line; develop new, and manage existing, client relationships through client marketing and study interactions; identify new sales opportunities with clients; lead all aspects of proposal development and submission including study planning, budgeting, and scheduling; establish critical project objectives and performances with client; lead contract preparation and negotiations.

  • Project Execution: Facilitate timely, quality, and profitable execution of studies within the Business Line; serve as study director when applicable and quality control leader for Business Line deliverables; accountable for key financial performance metrics within the Business Line; accountable for technical execution of projects within the Business Line. Serve as a study manager as required leading all aspects of study execution including scope, schedule, and budget; ensure quality control of deliverables; analyze and communicate study status, risks, schedule, and costs to all internal and external stakeholders; lead multi-discipline teams of consultants and analysts; plan, organize, and communicate project personnel needs to department management.

  • Leadership: Mentor and train less experienced staff on technical and business aspects of studies and the industry; serve as a recognized industry-leader in transaction advisory; support company initiatives; support hiring of experienced employee owners required to grow the Business Line; identify the training needed for staff to develop and sharpen skills related to Business Line services.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or related field from an accredited program. Advanced degree is a plus such as an MBA or Engineering Management.

  • Minimum 13 years related experience with a broad and deep understanding of transaction advisory.

  • Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of consultants and analysts regarding transaction advisory studies.

  • Proven ability to lead multi-discipline teams of consultants and analysts.

  • General business and financial calculation knowledge.

  • Effective Study Management skills.

  • Ability to work with existing and new clients to identify new projects, articulate to the clients our ability to perform those projects, and translate that into the sale of consulting services.

  • Ability to communicate with various business contacts to understand their needs and translate them into a scope of work that meets their desired outcomes.

  • Be comfortable in roles spanning the breadth of Transactions Advisory and will have a track-record of pursuing opportunities, demonstrating deep knowledge of technical advisory requirements across the investment cycle, to bring the right solution to the client.

  • Have a strong range of existing business relationships within financial services, private equity, portfolio companies and corporations.

  • Have experience of working with wider client service teams and sales teams in widening the range of relationships with clients.

  • Need to be ambitious and driven to grow and develop a Transaction Advisory team, and a “self-starter”, as the role requires a good deal of autonomy.

  • Extensive experience of winning and delivering engagements with a Transactions Advisory perspective.

  • The ability to talk credibly to, and evidence of working successfully with, senior management clients on the key issues facing their respective industries, and to understand their business strategies with a view to identifying relevant Transactions Advisory opportunities.

  • The ability to lead and develop strong client relationships and a proven track record of commercialising relationships, with particular emphasis on developing new relationships (outright or within clients with existing coverage).

  • A commercial mind-set, with the ability to maximise revenue opportunities for 1898 & Co.

  • High resilience and a willingness to work in a deadline driven environment in rapidly changing situations, with significant autonomy.

  • Strong personal impact, and comfortable dealing with senior and C-suite level stakeholders inside and outside 1898 & Co.

  • Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines and to be effective in on-site work environments.

  • Ability to manage multiple studies concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.

  • Ability to focus on the big picture to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs, while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to study outcomes.

  • Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and the market requires changes to the service offerings provided by our group.

  • Willingness and ability to develop a broad set of service offering types to allow for flexibility to go where the work is.

  • Willingness to cross sell other services offered by 1898 & Co. outside the Director’s core set of services.

  • Willingness to negotiate with clients for new service agreements.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).

  • Must have ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of industry, government and public contracts on study-related matters.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Professional Registration preferred.

  • Ability to travel.
