Burns & McDonnell Director of Design - Architecture (New York) in Manhattan, New York


Burns & McDonnell is seeking an engaging Director of Design for our New York studio. As Director of Design, you will set the design vision and creative standard for staff and current and prospective clients, working to manifest this standard in all project work across multiple market sectors. You will work closely with architecture, engineering, and construction leadership to align design direction with strategic business initiatives, profitability goals, and Burns & McDonnell’s core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Promote and establish best practices and procedures for an integrated design approach to create high design solutions

  • Engage with clients, project team members, construction team, and subcontractors from initial marketing through design and completion of construction as needed to develop and execute excellence in design

  • Collaborate with marketing team to develop the design message and collateral for delivering our message to clients and the community

  • Mentor and develop interdisciplinary design staff – both architects and engineers – on cohesive collaborative design process

  • Promote Design-Build philosophy and foster construction collaboration and integration even on design-only projects

  • Directly manage senior level designers, providing project guidance and input, performance feedback, and conduct yearly performance reviews

  • Recruit additional design leadership and staff as needed for the growth of the studio

  • Initiate and lead efforts to educate studio on design principles, innovations, and trends

  • Maintain awareness of project design efforts, and work with project managers to monitor project scope, schedule, and profitability

  • Build and develop client, business, and industry relationships, including identifying and leading pursuits of new opportunities

  • Actively engage in the New York design community and professional associations through thought-leadership, speaking engagements and conference panels, interviews, and publication of the firm’s work


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Architecture from an accredited university

  • 15 years of experience in architectural design, including experience in a leadership role

  • Experience working in an integrated A/E/C firm with design experience in multiple markets preferred

  • Experience in New York metropolitan market preferred and/or significant national experience

  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following market sectors: Commercial, Life Sciences, Healthcare, Logistics, and Federal

  • Architectural license preferred

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, client-focused design environment

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with an ability to clearly articulate design concepts to clients, the community, staff, engineers, and constructors

  • Passionate about design and ability to lead multiple design teams

  • Experience providing leadership for design teams from initial client contact through client interviews to developing project concept design

  • Experience and success building, cultivating, and expanding new client relationships

  • Ability to develop business success in a strategic and creative manner, embracing studio metrics of client satisfaction and studio profitability

  • Ability to sketch and direct design staff activities across various design tools and technologies

Compensation Range

$ 200,000 - $ 400,000

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the New York Public Act, An Act Concerning the Disclosure of Salary Range for Vacant Positions. The final agreed upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
