Burns & McDonnell Field Area Network (FAN) Engineer in Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota

Description

Our Transmission & Distribution global practice is looking for a Field Area Network (FAN) Engineer in the Northern Midwest to serve as a technical lead for field area network (FAN) deployment projects. The Field Area Network (FAN) Engineer will be responsible for engineering design and technical oversight of multiple field area network (FAN) deployment projects. Major responsibilities for the Field Area Network (FAN) engineer will include:

  • Design FAN networks utilizing client standards or developing new standards. Project deliverables may include:

  • identify applicable technologies and their strengths and disadvantages. (Licensed vs Unlicensed Spectrum, Radio Technologies: LTE, Spread spectrum, CDMA, etc, Radio Topologies: PTP, PTM, Mesh, Ring, Etc)

  • network planning optimization

  • network architecture diagrams

  • channel plans

  • RF studies (path and coverage studies)

  • equipment migration plans

  • bill of materials

  • engineering specifications

  • equipment plans: sections and details, wiring diagrams, power and fusing

  • physical details: grounding, cable routing, mounting hardware

  • device configuration files

  • Provide support to customers in field of expertise

  • Identify and troubleshoot network performance degradations

  • Assist in the creation of a field area network (FAN) deployment training program

  • Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced tools and techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods.

  • Identify, communicate and resolve issues on projects as needed.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Work with the project manager to establish project schedule and lead the engineering team to meet deadlines.

  • Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to client’s satisfaction and that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines.

  • Perform design quality reviews.

  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel to develop relationships with key client points of contact.

  • Prepare proposals and assist in presentations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, computer or other related engineering discipline from an accredited program.

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of work experience on field area network design and optimization.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Must be capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration preferred.

  • Previous consulting experience preferred.

  • Previous utility company experience preferred.
