Burns & McDonnell has an opportunity in our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Group for a Substation Drafter. This position is responsible for revising existing drawings and preparing drawings of basic components from explicit verbal or written instructions or detailed sketches. This position successfully plots drawings; learns and follows company and client drafting standards and procedures; learns the practices of a selected discipline. Other duties as assigned. The Drafter is a position reporting to the CAD Section Manager and will be required to provide basic drafting, plotting and deliverable assembly support for assigned projects. This role requires the ability to handle multiple drafting assignments and to prioritize work.

This position will be responsible for the drafting development an array of challenging items including the drafting and design of engineering deliverables on multiple complex utility projects with engineering staff. Responsibilities include the drafting and preparation of plans, schematics, 1-lines, 3-lines, wiring diagrams, materials lists, as needed to support the execution and development of deliverables for high and extra high voltage substations (HV and EHV). Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform drafting assignments by applying standardized drawing techniques from detailed sketches, verbal instructions and notes under the direction of an engineer.

  • Create sketches, layouts, plans and drawings for substation physical apparatus.

  • Draft control schematics, wiring diagrams and equipment connection diagrams.

  • Draft drawings according to client and/or company drafting standards.

  • Maintains current knowledge of design and drafting procedures.

  • Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting for engineering review.

  • Provide an accurate accounting of time spent on projects.

  • Routinely uses higher-level commands, timesaving programs and methods.

  • Perform design assignments by applying learned industry standard drafting techniques in the creation of electrical and structural drawings.

Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in drafting technology. Minimum of 5 years previous drafting experience. Additional experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Related consulting experience preferred. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent written & verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member. Proficient in at least one type of CAD system and capable of working in other software packages when necessary. Routinely uses higher-level commands, timesaving programs and routines.
