Burns & McDonnell Staff Estimator (Northeast Region) in Newton, Massachusetts

Description

The Staff Estimator plays a pivotal role in the pre-construction process, performing various critical functions. With a keen focus on precision and thoroughness, the Staff Estimator is responsible for the preparation and ownership of estimates and proposals across multiple disciplines, with a focus on Transmission & Distribution, and more specifically, Substations. Estimates are performed as a service to external clients as well as internal stakeholders, where the work product will be utilized as an essential tool to support projects executed through diverse delivery models, including Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and Program Management.

  • Assemble material, equipment, and labor costs for clients as well as proposals for EPC delivery model construction projects.

  • Analyze and insert specialty equipment, standard equipment, and material pricing into the estimate.

  • Review plans and specifications for risk issues and propose a mitigation strategy.

  • Perform constructability reviews.

  • Capture substation or transmission line outage duration costs.

  • Responsible for the development and accuracy/validity of estimate clarifications and assumptions.

  • Conduct subcontractor solicitation and pre-qualification tasks.

  • Prepare and deliver bid packages to subcontractors.

  • Collaborate on the development of scoping documents and commercial pricing forms.

  • Evaluate and condition subcontractor and supplier quotes.

  • Evaluate Subcontractor change order submissions and determine scope differentiations and cost impacts.

  • Analyze and incorporate quotes on bonds and insurance into the estimate for review.

  • Conduct small and disadvantaged business solicitation and evaluation.

  • Present estimating information at pre-bid meetings.

  • Present estimates to clients, internal and external.

  • Conduct subcontractor labor and market studies and make recommendations based on those results.

  • Develop high-level project schedules.

  • Support pre-construction services on client estimates and joint venture reviews.

  • Develop and present an estimating strategy and plan for each assignment.

  • Research cost history and update database (s).

  • Provide preliminary pricing for indirect and general conditions.

  • Evaluate fee, contingency and escalation and make recommendations.

  • Align contingency on specific items interior to the estimate and provide an overall contingency strategy if required.

  • Responsible for reviewing specialty and standard equipment pricing.

  • Review commercial terms and conditions for cost and risk items and present concerns to lead estimator.

  • Analyze and price value engineering for submission.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Compliance with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, engineering or related field and 3 years of direct project management / estimating experience.

  • Applicable experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

  • Ability to work independently or in groups, think creatively and analytically and make quick and sound decisions.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Desire to grow and develop with the pre-construction group.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office Suite tools and Bluebeam

  • Proficiency with OnScreen Takeoff, Sage-Eos, InEight, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Project is a plus.

  • OSHA 10-hour certification

Compensation

$105,000.00-145,000.00 Annually

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
