Burns & McDonnell Assistant Aquatic Biologist - (Omaha) in Omaha, Nebraska

Roles & Responsibilities

Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company, Inc. is seeking a entry -level aquatic biologist at our office in Omaha, Nebraska. This position will require applying for environmental permits issued by various Federal, State and local regulatory agencies and monitoring compliance with these permits. Additionally, this position will require supporting the field surveys necessary to develop the permit applications through use of GPS and GIS technologies. A combination of field activities and time spent in the office processing data, generating maps, writing, reviewing and assembling documents, correspondence, schedules, and additional project deliverables will be required.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • daily tracking of completion of tasks and proper documentation

  • Data recording and analysis using various collection methods.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations and their appropriate applications

  • Assist with various field survey and office tasks such as impingement/entrainment sampling, bathymetric surveys, habitat assessments, and wetland delineations.

  • Technical report writing assistance.

  • daily interface with various agencies, clients and team members to verify compliance, obtain approvals, reviews, and responses in a timely manner.

  • other duties, as assigned

  • 25-50% travel and overnight stays will be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in, Fisheries Biology, environmental science or a related natural science degree from an accredited program required.

  • Prior internship or natural science field experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental site assessment methods.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental compliance and compliance audits.

  • Basic knowledge of the environmental permitting process.

  • Basic knowledge of GPS and working in the ArcGIS desktop environment.

  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.

  • Valid driver's license required.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
