Burns & McDonnell Director of Water Construction (Multiple Locations) in Portland, Maine


The Director of Water Construction is responsible for the managerial leadership and direction of Construction strategic business initiatives, client strategy, team development, and project execution in partnership with the company’s Water Engineering Global Practice. The Director of Water Construction will lead the department in a safe, dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service.

Job Duties:

  • Lead a safety-first culture across the team and related projects. Proactively drive corporate and industry safety & health programs and initiatives.

  • Manage development and execution of national Water industry-related construction strategic business initiatives across both the municipal and industrial water/wastewater sectors to achieve goals and objectives.

  • Provide direction and oversight of business development efforts in identification and vetting of prospective clients and projects. Responsible for business development activities aligning with business goals.

  • Lead and develop Design-Build/EPC, Progressive Design-Build, CMAR, and Construction-only capture and proposal execution strategies and presentations.

  • Lead and participate in as needed, both upstream and downstream contract negotiations.

  • Provide vision and direction to and leadership of project execution including estimating/pre-construction, project management, project controls, procurement, safety, quality, and field operations.

  • Lead the identification of project risks and develop appropriate risk mitigation strategies.

  • Collaborate with Water Engineering to drive and develop best practices and tools across multiple project delivery models, contract types, scopes of work, project and team locations.

  • Understand, develop, and lead effective execution strategies utilizing direct-hire, subcontractor, and/or joint-venture partner resources on projects.

  • Provide leadership to the Construction team; direct and coordinate the Department driving efficient and effective utilization of staff.

  • Understand, develop, and oversee the utilization of construction based software, tools, and processes to increase efficiency in project execution for the Department.

  • Direct oversight and management of Construction administrative and marketing budgets and related expenditure of funds.

  • Achieve stated targets and standards for Water Construction financial performance.

  • Provide industry expertise and insight in the Water construction industry with respect to market pricing, sales approach strategies, potential joint-venture and subcontractor trade partners, and competition.

  • Present applicable monthly financial information to leadership.

  • Engage in strategies for cross-selling water construction services across the entire organization when the opportunities arise.

  • Responsible for driving alignment and support of Regional Office staff development, business plan, safety, quality, proposals, estimates, and execution quality.

  • Develop and manage a national team of construction professionals and drive effective resource coordination.

  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain outstanding employee-owners.

  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluation for selected department or direct reports.

  • Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes and goals of the organization within the Department.

  • Lead a strong quality process and program that adheres to the Burns & McDonnell Quality program.

  • Responsible for business diversity initiatives

  • Bachelor's degree in construction, engineering, business or related degree from an accredited program and/or a minimum of 15 years relevant construction experience.

  • Significant experience in client and business development.

  • Extensive experience in successfully managing projects, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, safety, quality, coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.

  • Strong facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated success as to safety, quality. budget, savings and/or profitability in completed projects and Department overall.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage.

  • Excellent planning and analytical skills.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
