Burns & McDonnell Assistant Environmental Engineer in Richmond, Virginia


Burns & McDonnell’s office in Richmond, VA, is actively seeking an Environmental Engineer to support civil/environmental design work for commercial, industrial and governmental projects. The chosen candidate will support the group’s civil/environmental engineering team and will enjoy challenging work with significant project variety at a successful, growing company. Be on a team that solves our client’s issues and problems for environmental and engineering practices encompassing utility transmission and distribution, renewable energy, federal, municipal and private development projects.

The Environmental Engineer will work on an integrated design team within our Environmental Services Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Complete grading and drainage designs using 3D design tools.

  • Perform hydrologic/hydraulic calculations using TR55, HY-8, Culvertmaster, HEC programs, PondPack, HydroCAD, etc.

  • Performing other engineering calculations.

  • Use Autodesk Civil 3D, perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks, detailed construction drawings, civil site plans using applicable standards and specifications, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

  • Write engineering specifications.

  • Perform shop drawing review.

  • Assist lead engineers with various and miscellaneous project duties.

  • Execute a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

  • Produce rough sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

  • Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into civil design and layouts.

  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • B. S. or M.S. in Environmental or Civil Engineering from an accredited program with current EIT certification.

  • Minimum 1 to 3 years applicable environmental/civil engineering and consulting experience.

  • Experience working with both private and public-sector clients is a plus.

  • Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D.

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Experience with field inspections and shop drawing reviews is a plus.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers, Designers and Detailers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
