Burns & McDonnell Assistant Commissioning Specialist (St. Louis) in Saint Louis, Missouri


The Assistant Commissioning Specialist will be responsible for assisting with commissioning, retro-commissioning and energy-related assignments for buildings and electro-mechanical systems. The Assistant Commissioning Specialist will work with the project team throughout the commissioning process, adapting commissioning plans to budget constrains, design factors or client needs.

  • Perform commissioning, retro-commissioning, monitoring-based commissioning, energy efficiency retrofit, and demand response projects for complex buildings and systems in the mission critical, healthcare, laboratory, aviation, manufacturing, higher education, commercial building, water & waste water and on-site energy markets.

  • Coordinate the identification and development of energy efficiency projects; from initial identification through installation and measurement.

  • Conduct monitoring and troubleshooting of HVAC systems with building automation and stand-alone data loggers to identify operational problems and find inefficient control sequences.

  • Perform on-site testing of HVAC, lighting, power, and control systems in new and existing buildings in conjunction with operation, maintenance and contractor personnel.

  • Maintain on-site ASHRAE energy audits and condition assessments to identify applicable and cost-effective energy efficiency and demand response measures.

  • Assist with energy savings and cost analysis for energy efficiency and demand response measures.

  • Validate the prioritization of energy and operational improvements based on budgets, relative cost vs. benefits, and likelihood of acceptance for installation.

  • Compile assessments, detailed evaluations, measurement and verification reports and retro-commissioning plans for existing facilities.

  • Document the development of concept designs for energy efficiency projects.

  • Assist with writing sequences of operations.

  • Conduct building energy use simulation for modeling alternatives to capture energy savings.

  • Complete measurement and verification activities, design reviews and recommendations for improvements.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate project records including data, documentation and reports.

  • Implement revision process of operating modes, sequence of operations and specifics of equipment, operations, and maintenance.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study. Equivalent combination of experience and training may be substituted for the degree requirement.

  • Minimum of 5 years of commissioning or related experience in a variety of facility systems and subsystems including controls, mechanical, electrical, life safety and building envelope systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High level of attention to detail.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Understanding of site safety procedures, including electrical safety a plus.

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing and potential clients, including, but not limited to DOE, aerospace, military, food and consumer product manufacturers, pharmaceutical, laboratories, and others necessary to sell and complete work.
