Burns & McDonnell is in search of an Assistant Structural Engineer for its growing Water Practice. Founded in 1898, Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned firm. The Assistant Structural Engineer will work on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of industrial and municipal water/wastewater projects. Working in a variety of markets ranging from power, manufacturing, pipeline, aviation, government and military facilities. Typical structures include steel pipe racks, steel supports, concrete foundations, vaults and wet-wells, tanks (filters, aeration basins, clarifiers, etc.), and pump stations. Typical building types to support our projects are masonry, pre-cast concrete, and pre-engineered metal buildings. In addition to design of new structures, condition assessments of existing facilities and recommendations for rehabilitation is expected. The Assistant Structural Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting structural plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

  • Perform structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion and/or construction.

  • Perform analysis and design calculations for a variety of materials and conditions including concrete, steel, masonry, and soil/foundations.

  • Design structural components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.

  • Modify and review production drawings to meet project requirements.

  • Review vendor and shop drawings.

  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget, staffing, and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of change orders.

  • Applies strong knowledge of commonly used structural concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the structural engineering industry.

  • Coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of materials.

  • Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Support in the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Master of Science in Structural Engineering or related degree preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community.

  • Basic knowledge in standard structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Basic computer skills include structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA), AutoCAD and BIM (e.g., Revit and Tekla).

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
