Burns & McDonnell Senior Mechanical Engineer in Saint Louis, Missouri


This position will be responsible for the successful completion of a diverse range of projects in Mechanical (HVAC), Plumbing, Piping, Central Utility Plant (CUP), Power Generation (CHP), Chiller Plants, Boiler Plants, Hydronic Systems, and similar design and construction projects or studies. Projects and clients will include airports, universities, colleges, industrial facilities, commercial facilities, government facilities, military facilities and other facilities with small to very large central utility plants.

This role will be responsible for the following:

  • Preparing plans, specifications, cost estimates, and studies.

  • Take projects from inception to completion.

  • manage projects, project teams, clients, project scopes, project budgets and project schedules. Lead a mechanical group and be capable and willing to help grow the group.

  • Identify new clients and new opportunities.

  • Proactively grow existing client relationships into repeat business and expanded service offerings.

  • Direct coordination with internal clients and external clients.

  • Serves as key account manager to develop work with existing clients.

  • Directs and coordinates activities of several disciplines on a project or program of large-moderate scope or a combination of moderate-smaller projects while also serving as lead mechanical engineer;

  • Initiates or assists in contract negotiations or preparation;

  • Participates in and leads direction of project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and establishing critical project objectives;

  • Takes responsible charge of the mechanical discipline on projects and mentors assistant mechanical engineers and designers in development of mechanical design.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited curriculum

  • Minimum of 7 years of related experience, including 3 or more years leading the mechanical discipline for multi-discipline projects.

  • Professional Engineering License required

  • Flexibility to travel 25% of the time.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to quickly build long-term connections with internal and external clients.

  • Must display a positive can-do attitude both internally and externally.
