Job Information

Burns & McDonnell Department Manager - T&D in San Diego, California


This position is responsible for the operational direction and leadership of the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice for San Diego in the La Jolla, CA office working directly with the T&D Regional GP Manager. This includes supporting and executing business strategy, developing high performance teams, and promoting the Burns & McDonnell culture, values and mission. Support office and global practice growth in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell’s core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service. Areas of responsibility include general roles supporting the overall T&D Global Practice in San Diego working closely with the GP Manager and other Department Managers including the following:

  • Adherence and promotion of Burns & McDonnell’s safety programs, training, and policies for all

T&D San Diego personnel as well as the promotion and management of the Safety & Health performance of the project team members.

  • Facilitate a thriving work environment that fosters the recruitment, development, and retainment of the market’s top-talent.

  • Supports the development and execution of the T&D Regional Office strategies and goals, and specifically those established for the San Diego office.

  • Conduct performance evaluation for selected direct reports and participating in evaluations of

other staff as required.

  • Responsible for maintaining and advancing internal relationships both internal to T&D but across all Global Practices.

  • Support initiatives for sales, revenue and income goals for the Regional Office.

  • Provide leadership to the team; directs and coordinates activities of several disciplines.

  • Serve as a technical advisor.

  • Communicates policies, purposes, and goals of the division.

  • Career coaching, leadership planning and development, and the planning and delivery of training and education.

  • Responsible for reviewing resource requirements with Department and Section Managers and help obtain necessary resources.

  • Support Diversity initiatives.

  • Recommend changes in the T&D San Diego structure and organization to achieve the objectives assigned to them.

  • Market global practice, Department and Section capabilities with higher focus on technical development functions and efficiency improvement projects to serve our clients and increase staff skills.

  • Work with the Department Managers to invest appropriately in their project teams’ personnel to maximize employee- owner career development, satisfaction, and retention.

  • Assist with and lead proposal efforts.

  • Serve as the technical advisor and provide senior-level input and evaluation of project development activities and EPC bid activities.


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program and registered as a licensed professional engineer.

  • Minimum 10 years related professional experience in T&D projects. Must have 3 years minimum experience as a lead engineer and/or project manager; previous supervisory experience preferred.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
