Burns & McDonnell Project Manager - Mining in Tucson, Arizona


Burns & McDonnell is looking for a seller/doer Project Manager for our Energy Global Practice (division) to grow our mining business in the Southwest United States.

  • Direct and coordinate conceptual studies, detailed design, field investigation, field installation and construction support in the mining industry.

  • Will be assigned as the lead engineer for Engineering Design projects.

  • Direct coordination with clients and other external clients. May initiate or assist in contract negotiations or preparation.

  • Initiate or assist in direction of project planning, budgeting and establishing critical project objectives.

  • Maintain and promote a focus on safety. Effectively utilize Burns & McDonnell's Quality Program in production of final deliverables. Ensures effective communication and coordination with other engineering disciplines

  • Ensure effective management of change, including impacts to total cost of ownership.

  • Mentor and guide less experienced designers and engineers.

  • Prepare mechanical equipment and packaged equipment specifications and data sheets, RFQ’s, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.

  • Primary equipment includes pumps, compressors, pressure vessels and internals, tanks, heat exchangers, crushers, conveying systems, SAG/ball/rod mills, flotation systems, lined bins & chutes, and integration of third party designed and packaged equipment.

  • Piping Design:

  • Select appropriate piping materials based on process flows and conditions utilizing BMcD standard Piping Material Specifications (PMSs) and Valve Design Datasheets (VDDs). Develop additional PMS and VDD specifications where BMcD’s standards do not cover the specific application.

  • Perform detailed design, including pipe stress analysis and prepare Piping Plans and Isometrics.

  • Piping Specials: Establish design requirements and specify piping specialty items. Assist in the development or revision of system P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), schematics and basic process flow diagrams utilizing SolidWorks/AutoCAD software.

  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings, and data.

  • Interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers/designers.

  • Prepare construction/installation scopes of work for mechanical equipment.

  • Participate in the development of construction specifications, project schedules, project budgets, project staffing planning, and construction planning.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited program.

  • Minimum seven (7) years of design experience, working with piping, pumps, process equipment in industrial applications like power, mining, aggregates, including 3 or more years managing mining engineering projects

  • Experience in piping with understanding of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

  • Must have familiarity with mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE) and MSHA standards.

  • PE license strongly preferred.

  • EPC project experience is highly preferred.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Must have the ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Previous consulting experience preferred.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be capable of working large projects and delegating work tasks to large teams, including utilizing remote team members as required.

  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with exceptional organizational abilities.
