Burns & McDonnell Operations Director - Northeast Region (Wallingford) in Wallingford, Connecticut

The Operations Director is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of directing projects, overseeing contracts, managing risk, and implementing the quality control program working directly with the Northeast Region (NER) General Manager. This includes supporting and executing business strategy, developing high-performing teams, and promoting the Burns & McDonnell culture, values, and mission. Support NER region growth dynamically and profitably based on core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service.

List of Job Duties

  • Assist the Region General Manager with developing and executing regional strategies and goals to support the NER’s growth with a lens on Innovation, strategic objectives & initiatives (OKRs), leadership development, projects, contracts, risk, safety quality and people development. Support all areas of recruitment, development and retention of employee-owners, and support DEI initiatives.

  • Assist the Regional General Manager with the strategic OKR process including Initiative identification and management.

  • Assist the Regional General Manager with geographic expansion strategy and implementation.

  • Assist the Regional General Manager with setting KPIs for each location based on office type.

  • Assist the Regional General Manager with the implementation of a Leadership Development program.

  • Facilitate innovative ideas through the Ignite and Launch programs.

  • Serve as the NER Director of Projects to ensure that teams adequately meet the budgets, schedules, and quality on each project to facilitate the region’s continued financial success and hold managers accountable.

  • Establish and implement a process and protocols for project reviews.

  • Conduct project reviews on a set basis depending on project delivery type, size, and global practice.

  • Establish Project Execution Plan template requirements and protocols.

  • Review Project Execution Plans and Q1 results.

  • Support the development and utilization of project controls tools for capturing, tracking and reporting progress.

  • Provide guidance and direction on corrective actions to be taken when necessary.

  • Report key project risks and concerns to the Regional Office Manager, categorized by global practice.

  • Collaborate with GP managers to execute BMcD’s corporate quality plan.

  • Serve as the NER Contracts Manager.

  • Develop and implement Prime Contracting best practices.

  • Provide Prime Contract agreement reviews and approvals.

  • Support contract negotiations of prime contracts.

  • Advise NER General Manager with regards to Prime Contract risks prior to signature

  • Serve as the NER Risk Manager.

  • Primary individual responsible for implementing the NER’s Risk Management Framework in coordination with the corporate Risk Framework.

  • Host internal NER pre-risk reviews and attend NER risk reviews with the project team and BMcD’s corporate Risk Manager. Report key risks & concerns to NER’s General Manager.

  • Attend pricing management reviews. Support commercial and pricing strategies related to how offers are presented, including considerations for limiting Burns & McDonnell exposure associated with schedule delays, market fluctuations, supply chain issues, price escalation, labor shortages and other factors that could negatively impact the project.

  • Implement region-wide Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program requirements.

  • Collaborate with global practice managers to execute BMcD’s corporate Quality Control program.

  • Organize the development of reports that provide the NER General Manager with a monthly overview of program compliance by global practice.

  • Participate in developing the NER business plans and strategic initiatives.

  • Assist in developing sales, marketing, capture, proposal, and pricing strategies.

  • Review NER global practice customer retention strategies.

  • Attend and report results to NER General Manager of "Go / No-Go" reviews.

  • Provide Red Team proposal reviews on an as-needed basis.

  • Support initiatives for the region's sales, revenue, and income goals.

  • Support GP Managers in achieving stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Collaborate with NER's General Manager toward meeting overall financial plans for projects, each GP, and the region overall.

  • Collaborate with GP managers to identify project management tools and resources that are to be deployed across the GPs and projects.

  • Assist with evaluating the need and obtaining resources needed across all global practices.

  • Identify opportunities for sharing resources across global practices.

  • Assist in career coaching, leadership planning and development, and the planning and delivery of change management, training, and education

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in architecture, engineering, or related field from an accredited program and 13 years related professional experience in successful management of related projects is required.

  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Candidates must possess ability to process and manage project budgets and financial data.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

Preferred Experience

  • Consulting experience

  • Applicants with an advanced technical or business degree

  • 15 years of experience in engineering and construction fields

  • Experience acquiring new clients and developing strong client relationships

  • Experience managing projects and personnel

  • Experience with multiple project delivery methods and compensation types

  • Project Management experience in the Transmission & Distribution, Building, Energy/Power, and Infrastructure market spaces.

Compensation

$225,000.00-500,000.00 Annually

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
