Burns & McDonnell Senior Instrument & Controls Engineer - Consumer Products (Wallingford) in Wallingford, Connecticut

Description

Leads and executes Instrument and Controls Engineering design activities for minor to major scale EPC projects in food, beverage, consumer products, pharmaceutical, life science and chemical industrial facilities. Responsible for providing Controls Systems and Instrumentation design deliverables for the project(s) in the front end, detailed design, construction, and start-up phases.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and project site safety policies.

  • Leads a team of Instrument and Controls Engineers and Designers in the execution of design and interfaces with a multi-discipline project team consisting of project manager, electrical, controls, estimating and multiple engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for leading and providing PLC and HMI programming design deliverables as well as commissioning and startup support of those design deliverables.

  • Lead and prepare instrumentation engineering/design deliverables, including Instrument Index, Instrument Data Sheets, Instrument Installation Details, Instrument Location Plans, Wiring Diagrams, and Loop Diagrams.

  • Lead and prepare controls design deliverables, including I/O list, Process Control Narratives, and Control Panel Design.

  • Lead and prepare electrical design deliverables including 480VAC and below equipment power design, installation plan drawings, and conductor schedules.

  • Lead the production of I&C purchase specifications, review bids, make technical recommendations and manage the overall purchase.

  • Develop and manage third party control system suppliers to comply with the control system design requirements, including participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).

  • Responsible for applying knowledge of commonly used I&C engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the engineering services industry.

  • Interfaces directly with construction personnel in development of contracts and execution of work. Tracks Instrument and Controls design efforts against budgets and expected progress.

  • Supports estimating at each project phase through various software such as Proposal works, SIL Solver, Bluebeam, Excel, and Visio to develop the design deliverables.

  • Works with clients and vendors directly in developing design and builds lasting business relationships.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to less experienced team members.

  • Experienced in the development of P&IDs and working with process engineers to define and show proper scope of the project.

  • Provides the specification of the various types of instruments for flow, pressure, temperature and level.

  • Develop and manage verification of design calculations, project studies and report preparation.

  • Responsible for quality reviews of project design submittals.

  • Quality review the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of electrical systems.

  • Work with sales and marketing team and identify key pursuits.

  • Coordinates workload with Control Systems Department Manager for developing project budgets and managing resources.

  • Interfaces directly with offsite design office and coordinates and tracks execution of all electrical controls department work to that office.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Instrumentation and Controls design deliverables include developing PLC and HMI programming, instrument specifications, instrument inquiry/purchase packages, I/O List, loop drawings, control panel designs, wiring drawings, one lines, FRS, SRS

Electrical design deliverables include load list, grounding, lighting, power plan, one lines, MCC/PDP, cable sizing and routing.

This position will be accountable for schedule, budget and making trips to job sites to survey and support existing installations and startups (travel about 30%).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrument & Controls, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering from accredited program. Minimum 7 years instrumentation and Controls experience (completion of Master’s degree in related field may be substituted for one year experience).

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignment. Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Professional Engineer preferred.

  • Project Management experience is preferred, PMP certificate is a plus.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Knowledge of applicable design standards covering Instrument & Control Design/Engineering such as NFPA, ISA, IEC, IEEE, ISA/IEC 61511, ISO13849, UL508A.

  • Experienced with variety of control and safety systems (PLC, SCADA, SIS, BMS, DCS).

  • Machine safety risk assessment and required PL design compliance to ISO13849 is a plus.

  • Process safety SIF/SIS design compliance to ISA/IEC 61511 is a plus.

  • Experience with designing and supporting Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA).

  • TUV Functional Safey Engineer is a plus.

  • Experienced in Field Instruments and Control Valve selection, calculation and detailed specifications.

  • Ability to participate in risk management review sessions (HAZOP, LOPA, SIL) using Risk graphs and performance measurement using PFD and Markov modelling.

  • Experience with PlantPAX and PackML is preferred.

  • Experience in Rockwell and Siemens PLC platform. Experience in GE, Modicon, Opto22, Mitsubishi, and Triconex PLC platforms a plus.

  • Familiarity with SmartPlant tools, particularly SPI (InTools), is a plus.

  • Familiarity with tools like SISTEMA, CCW, IAB, BatchSIM, and PlantSIM is desired.

  • Experience in high availability virtualization solutions, network architecture design and segmentation.

  • SCADA experience with Factory Talk and Wonderware local and distributed systems, Ignition Software is a plus.

  • MES Design and Implementation Experience a Plus, PTC ThingWorx, Ignition/Sepasoft, Parsec TrakSYS.

  • Experience in implementation of MS active directory within the Purdue model for ICS Security is a plus.

  • CCNP/CCNA certification is a plus.

  • Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Previous EPC project execution experience is desirable.

Compensation Range

$160,000.00 - $220,000.00

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
