Burns & McDonnell's office in Wallingford, CT, is looking for a Staff Substation Designer to provide technical design and drafting support for assigned substation projects. The Staff Substation Designer will report to the T&D CADD Section Manager and perform the following duties:

  • Create sketches, layouts, plans and drawings for substation physical equipment.

  • Design substation equipment access routes, driving access routes, trench and conduit placement, grounding requirement/calculations, and lighting protection.

  • Apply client standards to design and drafting activities.

  • Perform drafting assignments by applying standardized drawing techniques from sketches, verbal instructions and notes under the direction of an engineer.

  • Work with vector and raster drawing files in AutoCAD and MicroStation..

  • Develop, modify and review drawings according to client and/or company drafting standards.

  • Maintain current knowledge of design and drafting procedures.

  • Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting for engineering review

  • Review work from drafters and provide an accurate accounting of time spent on projects.

  • Provide an accurate accounting of time spent on projects.

  • Perform design assignments by applying learned industry standard design techniques in the creation of electrical and structural drawings.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or related field and eight years related experience or associate's degree and ten years related experience or eleven years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Advanced understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

  • Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

  • Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of assigned discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others including, but not limited to Project Managers, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.
