Description
The Automation Solutions Development Lead Engineer will lead automation design on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including warehousing logistics, distribution, and manufacturing. The Automation Solutions Development Lead will lead the project team throughout the conceptual and design phases; and support the project team during the construction phases.
Evaluate client business operations and objectives to develop an appropriate automated solution
Supports project staff in preparing for and/or facilitating customer conversations related to service offerings.
Performs reviews of service requests which may also include customers' standards specification and other documentation to determine requirements.
Generates the scope of work for automation services.
Completes proposals for automation services.
Provide assistance to estimating team through investigation, coordination, etc. of information to support their efforts.
Lead automation application for warehousing/logistics projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.
Develop basis of design documentation to define automated system performance to support client evaluation of solution viability.
Prepare automation equipment specifications and data sheets, Request for Quote (RFQ), Request for Proposal (RFP), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning and construction planning.
Apply knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard design solutions.
Quality review production drawings for a variety of projects and project related data as required by the project managers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.
Quality review the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of automated systems.
Leads field inspections, installation, measurements or calculations for private clients.
Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates. Report project performance.
Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the automation engineering practice. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Master of Science degree in Engineering a plus.
7 years required, 10 years preferred, of experience in warehouse material handling equipment application. Detailed engineering (project execution) experience preferred. Solutions and concept development experience required.
Strongly prefer experience in cost estimation of automated systems, preferably with multiple suppliers.

Pallet layer and piece picking using automation
Automated tote-based picking (picking stations)
Robot de-layering and picking

Containers used in automation, such as totes, trays and carrier boards
Automated packaging equipment in support of material handling
Understanding of IT hardware required for AMHE
Understanding of software and integration required for AMHE
Commissioning, factory acceptance testing, and site acceptance testing
Return on investment calculations to support a business case
Site assessments for applying AMHE
Logistics
Simulation software modeling
Workstation design
Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.
Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
Ability to travel.
